Potting Shed Progress
Located in the Upstate of Spartanburg County, South Carolina, we love to sit outside while we propogate plants.
Our need to have a roof over our heads while we work with plants increases as our business grows.
Check out the photos near the bottom of this page for our celebration party June 14, 2008.
We had a good time.
Here is an evolution of our temporary potting sheds.
They are not sheds at all, just a place to 'pot around' while we root cuttings and increase our landscape nursery stock.
Late July, 2007: Just an ancient card table and 2 old 'dumpster' chairs.
Our only covered area to store supplies was in the back of this garden trailer.
When we needed the trailer for other uses, we had to unload everything, use the trailer, and put everything back under cover before the day was over.
By the 16th of August, 2007, we had moved around the corner of and added another table and some storage tubs. That solved the loaded trailer problem.
In early May of 2008, in a quick move to make room for our 'real' potting shed, we moved into the small wooded area beyond the house. By now, our salvaged pots and other equipment was making quite a jumble.
Now, at the end of the house, where we had our 2nd potting station, we cleared 7 trees and began using up the rest of the salvaged deck lumber on a real potting shed.
This picture was taken May 14, 2008.
The structure is 16' X 16' and will be roofed. You will see more photos as we progress.
We did have to buy some 2x6x16 lumber to frame the outside of the deck floor.
Our other expendature so far has been for the metal hangers we will use to hang the floor joists.
All other parts and pieces so far are from salvage or things I already had on hand from a previous building project.
We believe in keeping it simple.
As Patty sets corner posts, I went after a fresh batch of potting mix and unloaded it into the bin you see behind the pickup. The compost/sand/potting mix bin was an earlier project, using more of that wonderful salvaged lumber.
Late in the evening, May 14, 2008, you can see what progress Patty achieved today. I helped her all I could by staying out of her way!
Noon on Friday, May 23, 2008 We are getting it framed a bit closer to putting up roof joists.
Friday evening, May 30, 2008 we got a tarp over our heads to create shade and some protection from rain while we finish the floor.
Not much rain.
We had hoped that by putting up the tarp we could trick the weather into thinking it should rain. I guess we would have gotten more rain if we had left the tarp alone! grin
June 12, 2008 the decking is down.
We quit for now.
In a week or two, when we get rested up, we will lift up the OSB deck board, turn it all over and paint the bottom side with water-proof sealer. Then lay the deck back down again and paint the top side with sealer and several coats of clear poly paint.
One of our neighbors says he has a whole barn full of windows if we want to get fancy. We'll see.
Patty and I were so thankful to have gotten this far that we invited in a couple friends and we had our 'Saturday Night Stomp' here June 14, 2008 with friends and food and homegrown music.
The evening was hot and muggy, so we decided to eat indoors, air conditioned, and out of the bugs.
By the time we were through eating, it was splattering rain, so we stayed inside for the rest of the party.
Never did get to 'stomp' on the new deck floor.
We'll do that another day when we pull and pack plants there for shipping!
Here are a few candid shots of some of the participants of the very relaxed 'doings'.
Janice on her drum. Notice the summer hair cut. I'm outside in the heat so much of the time these days, that when the temperatures hit 100 the first of June, I had my daughter run the clippers over my head. I've been threatening to do this for many a summer. Finally am out of the public eye enough to dare the hair cut. I doubt I'll let it grow out again for a long awhile. At least not this summer! Makes me look just like my Dad, but then, I guess I have that right. I'm related to him.
Curtis brought along his keyboard and sang along while he played. He lives in the Spartanburg area and loves to come up to campfires and any other doings where there might be food and music.
Patty really is not this grim. She had to borrow a pair of glasses to see the sheet music Curtis was playing from. What with the borrowed glasses and the distance to the music page, she had to concentrate.
I've withheld other photos for the moment to protect the innocent.
